Maryland is bordered on the north by Pennsylvania, on the east by Delaware and the Atlantic Ocean, on the south by Virginia, West Virginia (also on the west), Washington, D.C. and Chesapeake Bay. Maryland is the 42nd state by area, and with a population of of approx. 5.3 million is the 19th most populous state. Maryland's major industries include farming (corn, soybeans, tobacco, poultry and dairy products), mining (coal), steel products, communications equipment, fishing (crabs and oysters), and government services. Maryland entered the Union as the 7th State on April 28, 1788.

Maryland has several taxes at the state level, including a personal income tax, a state sales tax, and property tax.
