Vermont is the 45th largest state by area, and with a population of approx. 609,000, is the 49th most populous state. Major industries in Vermont include maple syrup, farming (dairy), tourism, electronics, and forest products (especially paper). Vermont was admitted to the Union as the 14th state on March 4, 1791 . The nickname of the state of Vermont is "The Green Mountain State". The name Vermont comes from the French words for green mountain, "mont vert."

Vermont has several state taxes, including a state income tax, a state sales tax, and property taxes.
